More Than Just a Smile: Exploring the Oral Microbiome

The oral microbiome is a complex and dynamic community of microorganisms—including bacteria, viruses, fungi, and protozoa—that inhabit various surfaces within the mouth, such as the teeth, tongue, gums, and saliva. This ecosystem plays a crucial role in maintaining oral and systemic health by supporting essential functions like the initial digestion of food, regulation of oral pH, protection against pathogenic microbes, and modulation of the immune response. A balanced oral microbiome helps prevent dental caries, periodontal disease, and halitosis, while also acting as a barrier against the entry of harmful pathogens into the bloodstream. However, factors such as poor oral hygiene, high-sugar diets, smoking, alcohol use, dry mouth, and the use of certain medications—especially antibiotics—can disrupt this microbial balance, leading to dysbiosis. Such imbalances have been linked not only to oral diseases but also to systemic conditions like cardiovascular disease, diabetes, and respiratory infections. Therefore, maintaining a healthy oral microbiome through regular brushing, flossing, proper hydration, a balanced diet, and routine dental care is essential for both oral and overall health.
