I am the Beacon Project Manager and Social Responsibility Manager at the University of Manchester. My role is to encourage and support staff and post graduates to undertake public engagement. I also work collaboratively with the other beacon project managers to coordinate and evaluate the impact of the public engagement activity commissioned across the beacon partnership.

In collaboration with Vitae NW Hub, the Manchester Beacon made 5 small seed awards to create opportunities for early career researchers to communicate their research in an accessible way. They were supported and mentored by experienced public engagement providers. http://www.flickr.com/photos/manchesterbeacon/sets/72157625390105738/show/

The University of Manchester, in partnership with the Manchester Beacon, is committed to fostering a culture of research that engages with society. But how can we encourage and support our researchers to participate and excel in public engagement?
The UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council (EPSRC) runs a successful mentoring scheme to support researchers within its Partnerships for Public Engagement Award.
So what lessons are there for us to learn from this mentoring scheme and are we able to adopt some of this best practice to meet the training and development needs of our own researchers?

Think About It: is feminism relevant to young women today?
We brought together a youth worker and a researcher, both interested in the gendered lives of young women and the relationship between young women and feminism, to organise an event with local young women on feminism, education and the young women’s aspirations, and at the same time, used the event itself as an occasion for ethnographic research and reflection into public engagement and social participation, and so linked a number of existing programmes, the Youth Participation Programme at ICA-UK, Feminist Webs (an intergenerational feminist project, www.feministwebs.com) and the Culture, Participation and Inequalities’ research cluster within the Centre for Research on Socio-Cultural Change (CRESC) at the University of Manchester.

Working with South Asian Communities to inform policy development.
Informing research volunteers from the community on activities and outcomes of research studies is important in generating and maintaining interest in University research. Outcomes of two-way engagement with local communities will aid the Dermatological Sciences Research Group in establishing public engagement routinely in all areas of research.

This project aimed to address three problems common in outreach efforts. Problem 1: how to get the maximum done while minimising impact on hard-pressed academics? Potential solution: use postgraduate presenters. This spreads the load, and allows more to be done, while at the same time developing the skills of the students, and providing role models closer in age and background to the constituency. Problem 2: How to get good practice in one place seeded in others? This project offered a means to try to encourage other departments to follow the lead from a proven model in UoM Chemistry. Problem 3: how to reach out to the full community, and not just their children? The final idea was to time the shows close to children’s pick-up time, and encourage adults to join in when they would be there in any case to pick up children.

Nowgen recruited 15 scientists working in medical and life science research to take part in an Ideas Workshop to support the subsequent delivery of a “Meet the Scientist” event for Manchester Science Festival at the Manchester Museum of Science and Industry. The programme included a formal evaluation of the participant’s attitudes, confidence levels and skills before and after the training and public engagement event. The ideas generated for the event were captured as one page summaries to create a resource bank of activities for dissemination.

This project sought to expand an existing programme of public outreach at CHSTM by developing a sustained programme of collaborative engagement activities with communities on health history. It aimed to identify possible community partners and to begin to build a mutual dialogue.

A web based staff survey revealed a general lack of awareness and engagement with the arc EU Research User Group (RUG). As part of the project an information tool was developed for use by staff members to improve engagement with the user group. Staff also now receive information about the group as part of their formal induction to the unit.
