The Manchester Beacon is a network of University staff, students, community groups and cultural organisations making a difference to Greater Manchester through public, community and cultural engagement.
Founded originally as a partnership in January 2012, the Manchester Beacon is part of the Beacons for Public Engagement initiative which aims to change the culture in higher education to be more supportive of public engagement.

The Manchester Beacon facilitates connectivity between academics, students and creative practitioners. One such connection was between microbiologists, the society for applied microbiology, University students and music collective, single cell. These groups worked together to do a public event to raise awareness of malaria as part of World Malaria Day at Nexus Cafe in the Northern Quarter.

Manchester Beacon commissioned a Community Leadership programme in Autumn 2010 which consisted of two complementary projects - Step Up and Inspiring Leaders. MISPA (Manchester Institute of Sport and Physical Activity) at Manchester Metropolitan University (MMU) to delivered Inspiring Leaders, a free leadership training programme. Inspiring Leaders was delivered between November 2009 and April 2010.
Inspiring Leaders was open to local leaders in the voluntary and community sector in neighbourhoods adjacent to Manchester based universities: Ardwick, Moss Side, Rusholme, Longsight and Hulme

It enables the building where he works to know where he is and customise its environment. Technology implants have been common place for many years. Pacemakers allow many people with heart problems to live normal healthy lives. Brain implants can help those with Parkinson's Disease keep tremors under control.
But what will happen in the future? Will we all want to have implants that would allow us to enhance our lives, even if we didn't really need them?

The first commissioned project, produced and delivered by Just-B, aimed at driving Manchester's collective creativity to catalyse, facilitate and forge links between disconnected communities through a series of physical and virtual activities.
The goal was to facilitate better communication between two or more social groups and provide tools to visualise the interaction.
A £25K commission & four £1K development grants were for up for grabs by a Manchester-led team.
The final commission went to ArcSpace Manchester who set up a sustainable creative cluster run by artists and academics in Hulme. Using open source software, re-conditioned computers and a community led search engine and directory creative links, ethical and environmental trading is facilitated.
